Back Pain and its Common Causes
When someone complains of any physical pain, some are quick to joke that old age is starting to set in and taking its toll on the body. However, back pain, while being one of the most common signs of advanced years, does not necessarily mean that one’s body is growing old.
Chronic pain in the back may be a sign that one has scoliosis, which is the misalignment in the curvature of the spine. Such a condition has to be treated by a medical professional, usually with the help of Physical Therapy. In line with this, patients that have this condition are usually prescribed a different type of mattress, to help improve and relieve them of the pain.
However, not all discomfort in the back area is caused by a serious medical condition either. There are some individuals who experience some pain, but not as often as someone with scoliosis, slipped disk or osteoporosis. This can normally be attributed to an uncomfortable sleeping position the night before, or perhaps because that person has been sitting for long hours on end. Back pain in these cases can be treated through massage therapy, replacing the mattress with a more appropriate one and observing proper posture.
In most cases, softer mattresses can be detrimental to one’s back because they do not provide adequate support, even if they seem more comfortable. It is always best to consult with an orthopedic professional so that proper recommendations can be made regarding sleeping and working conditions and any back pain involved, together with the physical and massage therapies needed.
