Medical Transcription – hidden facts
Starting working as a Medical Transcriptionist after getting necessary qualification from a medical transcription school is being seen as a most promising career in present era, when every other industry is passing through worst pace of development. When most business sectors are struggling hard even to survive, medical transcription schools are registering significant growth all around the world. Why? Because, predictions are being made that in the next couple of yrs MT sector will register 16% growth and seeing these reports more and more students are getting enrolled for various medical transcription courses.
Most of the jobs in MT sector are offered by US based medical centers or health clinics because there MT reports are considered the proof of treatment, diagnosis of disease and the base of charging fees. MT reports are considered vital legal document to get claims or for other settlements. Because of considerably fast paced development of internet technology and improvement of communication facilities, India emerged as the no 1 choice for outsourcing MT services. Thousands of companies are catering MT services for their global clients. Timezone difference is also a helping factor in this growth story and this will always remain unchanged. So, the career in MT is being seen as the safest one.
The cost of completing medical transcription course is considerably low if compared with other equally good potential courses. Some medical transcription schools are offering MT training online also that facilitates the students to get this qualification in their free time that too while being at home. To get practical experience, students can get enrolled with some reputed MT center. Some institutes call the students for campus training also after completion of course. Most medical transcription institutes conduct career advancement training too to improve the chances of getting early jobs.
The nature of MT career is quiet interesting and provides ample opportunities to learn continuously. MT qualification can be availed at two levels: certificate course or degree course. A MT professional is expected to have good typing speed, vocabulary power, error free writing skill, capability to sit over PC for long hrs and the zeal to serve fast. After getting sufficient confidence and experience, one may start his/her own MT setup also which doesn’t need too much amount. Just a PC, required software, stop pedal, headset, printer and communication equipments are the basic gadgets. Finance is also easily available from various financial institutions because it is considered one of the most safe business operations.
Taking MT qualification from the most reputed medical transcription school is not a guarantee of success, one needs to take own initiatives to march ahead on the road of success.
Nature of Work
Medical transcription involves preparing a medical report (document) based on the doctor’s recorded message about the patient’s diagnosis and treatment. The doctors dictate into a telephone as they proceed with their interaction with the patient and the message gets digitally recorded into a computer attached to the telephone. This recorded message is transcribed by a medical transcriptionist. He listens to it and processes the data on a word processor in the form of a medical document. The process involves specific procedures and editorial policy guidelines. The transcribed document goes through two or three stages of editing by professional consultants and senior experienced transcriptionists. The medical report is then bounced back to the doctors via satellite communications.
Work Environment
The environment is office simulated. The transcriptionists hear recorded messages on the earphone and work simultaneously on the computer. The work requires hours of concentrated work.
Personal Characteristics
The ability to sit and work for long hours in one place is required . Medical transcriptionists must have a good command over English , an ability to understand and transcribe American speech loaded with medical terminology, ability to understand diverse accents, dialectical variations and varying dictation styles in American English. Exceptional listening skills, excellent concentration and ability to work with dedication and total involvement and attention to details is required.
Employment Avenues
The Health Care profession is the second largest industry in the US. As the demand for quality documentation continues to increase owing to increased specialisation in medical treatment, medical transcription can be satisfying long-term career. Jobs for transcriptionists will evolve in medical insurance, medical documentation also. The skills of a medical transcriptionist may be transferred to back end jobs in the Business Process outsourcing sector, legal transcription, insurance sector etc.
Earnings
Trainees receives a stipend of Rs. 5,000 per months while qualified medical transcriptionists begin with a salary of Rs. 7,000 upwards.
Study & Training
Medical transcriptionists must be graduates . Knowledge of medical terminology including anatomy, physiology and clinical medicine is an asset. Candidates who have excellent written and oral communication skills in English are recruited as a trainees for a period of six to eight months after qualifying in a written test. The training includes : medical terminology, types of medicines, anatomy and physiology of all body systems, various diseases, etc. Familiarization with medical and surgical procedures including instruments, supplies and equipment (prosthetic devices), use of medical reference material and research techniques, practicing listening with the American accent and turn of phrase with real-time projects is included.
