How to make Your Own Survival Pack/Bag - Bug out Bag Basics
I decided to write a little article about building your own survival pack. There are a lot of survival packs for sale online on sites such as EBay and Amazon, but I highly recommend making your own, mostly because it is a good idea to know exactly what is in your pack. It is never a good thing to need say, a 50' rope, only to find out the included rope in some random pack you bought is only 25'.
Your personal survival kit will most likely be slightly different than from the survival kits made by somebody else. Obviously a winter survival kit is made for cold environments and will include items that may not be necessary for a desert kit. That also is true for every other type of kit out their. A lot of people have special needs, such as medications that they will need to include in their kit.
Let's however take a look at some items that should always be included no matter what climate you may be in.
- 20 or more strike anywhere matches (waterproof matches are ideal) in a waterproof match case
- Magnesium fire starter or Firesteels (firesteel.com)
- Fire starting aid such as firesticks or firestarters. You can buy firesticks online.
- A flashlight is always important, but I find that a headlamp is very useful when you need both hands for something else
- A lightweight space blanket is always something I love having
- A basic First Aid kit of course
- 50 feet or so of 550 Paracord. You can search for the stuff online to learn more
- Water tablets or something to clean your water
- Survival Food – Power Bars are great, even if they don't taste it.
- A good knife, map, and signaling device such as a whistle or mirror.
- A survival guide! This is very important! The best guide I found is here.
There are of course many more items that should be included in your Survival bag, but this is a start. If are really serious about making a kit, you should really take a look at this product. It basically teaches you every aspect of surviving a disaster. And with everything going on in the world today, it's probably a good thing to know.
