What is the Lemonade Diet?
The lemonade diet is a detoxification program written by the late Stanley Burroughs. The diet – called the "The Master Cleanser" was written in the 1940s and continues to be popular to this day. The current version was published in 1976 and is basically a 50 page booklet outlining the guidelines of the diet. This diet is simply another type of "Detox Diet" (please see "What is a Detox Diet?" at www.AnswerDiet.com for more information on Detox Diets). The diet has increased in popularity primarily due to Beyonce announcing that she lost 20 pounds on the diet for the movie Dreamgirls in 2006.
As with many Detox Diets, no solid foods are allowed, nor are any supplements. The guidelines require the dieter to strictly drink the recommended formula or "Lemonade" to maintain hydration. The plan calls for you to drink 6 or more servings daily of the lemonade drink. The only other available items to intake are "salt water flush" of 2 teaspoons salt mixed in a quart of water in the morning, and an Herbal Laxative tea at night, if needed.
A single serving of the Master Cleanse drink consists of:
- 2 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice
- 2 tablespoons grade-B organic maple syrup
- 1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 10 ounces filtered water.
After following this fast for 4-14 days, dieters are urged to slowly ease back into solid food, starting with foods like vegetable soup, followed by fruits and vegetables.
Recommendation
Of course, weight loss is inevitable when you stop eating and drink very few calories. But this kind of diet can also be dangerous to your health. The diet is deficient in all the essential nutrients: calories, vitamins, minerals, protein, carbohydrates, fiber, and fat. Exercise is not part of the diet prescription either but that is likely because exercise would be difficult or impossible without taking in any calories in ones diet. As with most Detox Diets, it is strongly recommended that this diet regime be avoided in favor of other diets providing a healthy balance of nutritious foods, reduced fat and sugar intake and plenty of exercise and physical activity.
