Hoodia Gordonii And Extreme Diet Pills
Hoodia gordonii is the botanical name given to a species of small succulent plant native to southern Africa. The plant grows in small clumps of green shoots that resemble cactuses and can be found in the arid desert and semi-desert regions of South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique.
The plant has long been known to have both appetite and thirst suppressing qualities by the hardy peoples who have been living in that region for perhaps tens of thousands of years. These San peoples (formerly referred to as 'Bushmen', a term which is now considered derogatory and thus no longer used) are known to have consumed Hoodia stems before going on long foraging trips into the desert. They ate the Hoodia because it helped to ward off the pain and anxiety caused by severe hunger - or at least so this is claimed.
Hoodia only came to wider attention here in the West during the 1950's thanks to a documentary into the habits and behaviours of the San, based on research that was being carried out by anthropologists at the time. The purported appetite suppressing properties of Hoodia gordonii did not long escape the attention of the pharmaceutical industry, although perhaps surprisingly even though research into the plant and its active ingredients began in the early 1960s, rights to market Hoodia products as pharmaceutical grade diet pills were not bought until the 1990s.
It was soon discovered that the active ingredient of Hoodia is a chemical that has been labelled P57. This molecule has demonstrated strong appetite suppressing properties in rats and other rodents... when injected directly into their brains. Studies involving oral consumption of Hoodia or P57 have proved less conclusive, casting doubt on whether the active ingredient can be absorbed through ingestion.
Despite the lack of hard data in favour of Hoodia's effectiveness as an appetite suppressant extracts of this plant of varying strength are on sale, and many people have reported having some success when using a Hoodia-based natural diet pill.
