The Advantages And Challenges Of Drug Take Back Programs
With the documented increase of medication residue showing up in our drinking water, people are clamoring for a safe and efficient way to dispose of outdated or unused drugs and prescriptions. Drug Take Back Programs are one solution that solves the problem, but brings challenges of its own. Here are some of the issues surrounding these drug drop off locations.
How do medicines end up in our water? The answer is government recommended disposal methods of flushing certain dangerous drugs down the sink or toilet. The advantage to this type of discarding is that no children or pets can accidently ingest and possibly die from the medication. However, flushing medications mean they are introduced into our water systems. Another way drug traces are launched into the water supply is naturally through user’s urine or feces. According to Dr. Amy Tiemeier, a director in St. Louis’ Drug Take Back Program, “Even trace amounts of medications are believed to be causing fish mutations and might affect human health.”
The thought process behind Drug Take Back Programs is simple: give people a safe place to bring their unused and expired drugs and dispose of them in an environmentally friendly manner so no one can accidentally use or abuse them and so they stay out of our water sources. In reality, the process is much more difficult due to stringent government regulations. Dr. Tiemeier pointed out after leading the program for a year, “There is no standard protocol for dealing with medications, and regulations vary state by state.” Another challenge is finding a disposal company who knows how to incinerate the medications according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) standards. Controlled substances are illegal for Take Back Programs to accept, so they must be thoroughly on top of what drugs they accept and which they cannot.
In addition to these difficulties, Drug Take Back Programs must also receive the permission from a variety of agencies, such as their local government, “sewer districts, and environmental organizations.” Senior citizens often have a greater number of medications, especially ones that are outdated or that they are no longer using, so contacting community centers and other local senior groups is vital to ensuring a good attendance at your program.
